Helios 44M 58mm f2.0 Lens with M42 screw mount
4 of 4 found this helpful In reviewing this lens, I can state the quality is excellent; both in build and performance.
The Item purchased on e-bay carries the Zenit logo (a ray of light passing through a prism), and is inscribed on the fixed body of the lens 'Made in USSR'.
This indicates it to be made at the famous Krasnogorsk plant, often abreviated to KMZ (Krasnogorsk Mechanical Factory)noted for its Military Optics, and therefore of higher than normal specification.
Above the origin of manufacture inscription is the Serial Number.
Of the seven digits, the first two digits indicate the year of manufacture, therefore, 7900088 shows this lens was built in 1979.
From an exhaustive, but by no means complete catalogue available on-line at
http://zenit.istra.ru/catalog/lenseslist.html the Helios 58mm f2.0 lens has an Angle of View 40 degrees 28 minutes.
The Apature adjustment ring is firm yet smooth in operation; as is the helical focus mount.
At the base of the lens, is a rocker-lever marked A and M for automatic or manual apature function.
The M42 (metric) screw mount, is a convenient thread to fit a wide variety of camera bodies, with or without adaptors; and the Manual Focus provde an efficient and easy means to creative 'image capture' at a reasonble price.
Being a metalic and glass lens, it appears 'heavy' compared to the more modern versions of the lenses of plastic fabrication. I consider the extra few grams worthy of the increases in build and performance.
The item purchased came in a zipped, sewn leather barrel-case, with a rivited loop-handle; that appears to be the original, to protect this quality lens.
I am lead to beleive the 'Helios' brand was never registered by Russia within the USSR, and consequently the name Helios was adopted by manufacturers in the Far East in later years, that maybe of similar quality, but less well made: so be aware when and where you intend to purchase a Helios lens.
Therefore my overall assessment is an excellent product at an affordable price, giving a splendid performance: Highly Recommended.
