Lessons from History ?
Personally, I have a deep suspicion of most politicians of all Parties. I say that to hopefully show my review of this book is not based upon support, or hostility to anyone.
The book, consisting as it does of researched personal accounts, gives a surprising insight into the attitudes of Nations that had recently fought the greatest war in history.
It may surprise a few to discover the alienation, suspicion, and sympathies that the unwitting contributors express about their former allies and enemies.
It is not an apologist for the rise of Fascism, but extensively covers the political, social, and financial situations that both allowed, and encouraged it to happen, ranging between outright support to complete indifference.
The book describes the almost casual rise of Hitler, a clear opportunist who tapped in to much of the despair of
the electorate at the time. It shows how the coming shadow of extreme fascism was denied, by many, albeit there are one or two comments about the future by certain individuals who clearly saw the consequences of what was coming. The book starts by presenting the reader with a simple question, an excellent opening which leaves the reader to wonder if I was there, what would I have done, or perhaps more importantly in this day and age, what should I do. If, as they say, history repeats itself, I would advise many to read this book.

Great and lasting quality
Although I have an electric shaver for occasional convenience, I regularly use disposable razors for a close shave. I have tried a number of the years, and found they ranged between simply awful, to quite good. However there is one that I found stood out from the rest, and I found this by simple experience. I originally bought the Lacura razor blind, in that I knew nothing of their reputation or quality. I found the razor absolutely better than the others I had used before. The handle is more robust, and slightly heavier than others which I find a bonus, but more importantly, let us come to the blades themselves. During the Covid lockdown, two blades took me through one year of comfortable shaving. I am being genuinely honest here. Sadly, I had thrown the packaging away a long time ago, so I did not know who manufactured them. Consequently, I have been using a range of other manufacturers, all of whom have blades that pretty much are worn out after half a dozen shade. I had kept my last Lacura razor in order to give a final run over my face after shaving with another blade. Fortunately, I saw the name on the handle, and finally discovered the blades I had been wanting for some time. I have no doubt some will be suspicious of my experience. I have no link or benefit from Lacura (excepting the shave), but the above is a true testament. Trust me, it seems almost unbelievable to me, and my when I told my brother-in-law, he just accused me of being tight. I have found my preferred razor by experience. It is a simple as that.

Extensively Researched Countdown To Armageddon
The First World War was arguably the greatest disaster that ever happened to Europe. It led to the fall of three Empires, and a terrible loss of Humanity, and finance. Leading directly to World War Two, its effects can still be felt today.
So, just how did the Emperors, Kings, and Politicians manage to allow such a debacle to occur?
No event takes place because of just one issue, and this hugely researched book shows how a combination of pride, prejudice, nationalism, deceit, egos, and in some cases simply bad luck, led to the major powers of Europe tearing themselves apart.
It is eminently readable, and the list of characters at the beginning helps enormously in identifying the interaction between embassies and individuals, that became increasingly urgent as the spectre of war, seemingly so far away at the beginning of July, accelerate at an almost unstoppable pace.
Having read several books on the outbreak of World War one, if you only ever read one, choose this. It will also show some of the characters involved in a new light.
Highly recommended.
