Bargain, with great battery life and still pretty cutting edge
I bought this as an upgrade for my partner for £150.
While she doesn't need the latest and greatest smartphone she badly needed something fast, and up to date features with good battery life.
Even though this phone was released in about Feb 2011 in the US and about 6 months later in the UK it's still competitive today, and a bargain, if like me, you can pick one up second hand. The cost of unlocking it to any network was £5 and took all of 5 minutes.
Weight, size, and feel in the hand along with speed and build quality are all great. As is the QWVGA screen which is a higher resolution than the majority of current phones though not as high as new ones coming out with HD screens. The screen is bright and text is crisp and legible even in direct sunlight, and unlike some, I don't find the pentile amoled to be an issue - sure other screens are better, but you need to decide what is important to you - I've still yet to find a phone that has eveything I want!
As with most motorola phones the sound and reception on this phone are excellent in every way.
Battery life with moderate to heavy use will vary depending on the number and frequency of apps syncing data but on standby it regularly gets 30 hours and could probably get more if configured to save battery better and turned it off overnight. It's better that the majority of smartphones for battery life and great for my partner, who is a light user. This is of course due to the 1930mah battery which is probably about 30-60 % bigger than average smartphones.
The downsides are that the stock software is 2.3 Gingerbread which is nearly 18 months old, overlayed with the motorola skin motoblur, which while is has some great features, can bog the phone down with background processes for apps that you don't need or want. This also means a delay in receiving the update to the latest version of android 4.0 ice cream sandwich (ICS), although it is coming in the 3rd quarter of 2012.
However, if you are at all tech savy and don't mind tinkering, you can easily and safely unlock the bootloader and root the phone, allowing you access to far superior custom version of 2.3 gingerbread such as Cyanogenmod or Neutrino or even cutting edge builds of ICS, which is what I have running on the one I purchased. Please do your research before attempting this though! On the plus side, the official ICS is purported to be much toned down and a better experience and hopefully things will improve now that google now owns motorola, so you can be content that even stock software will be updated fairly soon.
The only other thing which lets the phone down is a slightly plastic feeling back which can be bit too slippery in the hand. This does let down an otherwise solid phone with great features, which compares favourably to current phones and can be picked up for a great price.
For those looking for the latest and greatest, I suggest the Galaxy S3 or HTC One X or look out for the Huawei Quad D and Motorola Razr Maxx and HD which take battery life to another dimension.
