Looks Great - Photos Don't
Kitted up with a big-for-its-size lens, full manual mode, pop-up flash, and combination image-stabilisation tech, this might look like a better alternative to a basic "pocket camera" - but looks are about as far as the camera goes. The unmarked menu buttons are intuitive and seem to work on some kind of magic, and the tidy function select dial keep the deign very un-fiddly, almost business-like.
Firstly, to address that big lens. What does it add over a normal retractable? Bulk. Little else. I'm sure the lens itself is pretty good, but it's let down by picture quality. Full manual is fine and easy enough to use, but longer exposures bring sensor noise even at lower ISO, so the picture quality lets it down. The pop-up flash is good, charges reasonably, projects well. The image stabilisation isn't much cop, better than the budget cameras, but even on OPS2 mode doesn't stand up to the IS of an equivalent Sony, bringing in more blur than would be expected for minimal camera movement.
But the main thing about this camera is the truly horrible picture quality. I don't know quite what Samsung were thinking when making the software, but it spoils almost every photo it takes. In a side-by-side comparison against an iPhone 4S, it was the Apple that came out top. Colours are eroded, sharpness is lost, and the JPEG compression is merciless. The odd decent shot is possible, but even at ISO100 the images seem to grain and blotch. There is some discussion on internet forums about what can be done to correct this, but no real solution because the camera is fading into obsolescence. A place it, unfortunately, deserves to be.

FWM589 like woah!
2 of 2 found this helpful Normally I'm all about audio fidelity and accurate sound reproduction. This is a huge step away from that, as the FWM589 has several modes and features to boost or alter the "shape" of the sound. The chief of these modes is called MAX SOUND, (in big capital letters, because that's what this system is all about - just look at it for an idea) which dynamically amplifies music for the most impact, at the cost of fidelity and originality. It's vulgar, and I like it.
It's not loaded with features, but covers the basics, timer, clock, RDS, etc. The MP3 CD function is alright, not that I'll use it much. It also has a USB Link feature, which works well, if you can get around the setup/installation minefield of technological pitfall nuisances. The mode I prefer is called MIX-IT (again in capitals letters) which takes two inputs and converts them to one output. Which means I can have the audio output and the sub woofer output, both through the speakers, at the same time. This works well, as the speakers are more than capable of handling the boosted low-end while still keeping top end clarity.
In the handbook it recommends only using the packaged speakers, but it drives my pair of twin 15" subs and quad piezo tweeters pretty nicely too. Much louder, if a little crude in terms of absolute quality.
Downsides are few but annoying. On start-up, it cycles through the disc tray with a rumbly clunky mechanical sound, which you also get when swapping CDs or opening the trays. MAX SOUND boosts the volume, a lot, so it's best to turn it down before hitting the big red button. Lastly, there's no "off" setting for the EQ! You can have hall, cyber, jazz, cinema, and many other EQ settings, but nothing for just pure unfiltered sound.
Overall, a very "in-yer-face" system that can deliver some devastating sound, but certainly not one for the purist audiophile.
