This stuff is great (when used properly).
DMSO works great as a conduit to get 'surface medications' to penetrate. But it's a little scary just how good it works, and caution is advised (use gloves during application, only use small amounts, etc.).

Time will tell.
We have a number of the original PHBs in our gaming group and they all started falling apart soon after we got them. I purchased a couple of these newer printings of the PHB to replace the old ones and to have extras for new players to borrow. It was a great price, they look great, and they seem to be well made- but only time will tell.
