Wicked the musical soundtrack review!
Fantastic musical based on the reworked back history of the life and times of the wicked witch of the west. Chronicles her life from traumatic birth and early life, to the day when a farm girl from kansas arrives, squashes her sister and skips off down the yellow brick road with HER ruby slippers! Songs rang from the infectiously comic 'popular' as galinda the 'nice' witch instructs elphaba the 'wicked' on how to be like her by giving her a personality makeover; to the stand out track on the album, the dramatically sweeping 'defying gravity'. Galinda are thrown together as 'roomies' at Shiz University. There mutual reluctance is expressed in the track 'what is this feeling?' that builds like a coventional show tune until they both anwer with 'loathing'. There is something rotten in the emerald city as movements of Animals (that is humanised animals like the cowardly lion) are being restricted by the recently blown in, and self appointed Wizard of Oz. 'Something Bad' is a desperate plea by Goat who seems already to be losing his human qualities as he sings with a broken bleat. Elphaba and Galinda set out on a mission to the Emerald City to plead to the Wizard's sensitive nature to repeal this law. As a sideline the witch thinks it a good opportunity to ask him to cure her of her green skin condition (which has mysteriously not been inherited from either of her parents!). The wizard has his chance in the spotlight with 'a sentimental man' and 'Wonderful' reminiscent of 'Mr Selophane' from Chicago. Things go terribly wrong for Elphaba as she announces in 'No Good Deed' a song full of disappointment an defiance. Rumours abound about this newly at large witch that she has an all seeing eye and that she is so evil that pure water can kill her. Witch hunters are sent out vowing to kill the witch with the same musical intensity and forocity as 'one day more' from 'Les Miserables'. Wicked on the whole encompasses drama, comedy, kookiness and classic broadway moments interspersed with tracks such as 'Dancing Through Life' and 'I'm Not That Girl' that could have come from High School Musical or a Disney movie. All in all, I loved it, so much so I am now reading the book that inspired it. Cannot wait for the up and comming Disney movie later this year. The CD of the musical does not seem to have any adult themes in it, but the book is very much an adult book full of everything that life throws up such as affairs and some sexual references. I do not know if the stage musical still contains these or if they have been screened out-just be cautious if you were thinking of taking young children. I presume that the forthcomming film will be a little more child friendly as it is being made by Disney! Prepare to be put under the spell of Wicked!
