Simple but very useful
Its funny, when so much of the photography equipment we buy is so expensive that now and again a simple and relatively cheap gadget appears that makes a big difference. This is one such item. A friend of mine suggested that I buy one as I had recently bought a new Gitzo carbon tripod with an Arca Swiss plate.
I had an shot planned for a few weeks time where I knew I would be using the camera in portrait orientation. I had already shot the image a few weeks previous and decided to reshoot it in landscape mode changing from my 14mm to a 24mm but creating a series of images (6) that I would piece together.
Having this device on my ball and head made the shooting of this image so much easier. Without the tripod would have been off balance and the panning around the room much more difficult to achieve. Since the tripod was sitting on carpet as you will see in the image it was important that there was no movement as with the long exposures I needed it would be all to easy to get un-sharp images.
The L shaped bracket plate is simple well made and makes a big difference when shooting on a tripod especially if you are shooting in portrait orientation or are changing from one to another. Having the camera exactly centred on top of the tripod instead of towards one side makes the operation of multiple shots so much easier enabling you to forget the mechanics and get on with paying attention to creating the image. To see the resulting image search for "Mark L Edwards" & "Teenage Dreams"
