One Day in the Life of Ivan Denisovich (Penguin Modern Classics) By Aleksandr S
    28 Dec, 2017
One Day...that's how quickly you'll read this gripping novel
A compelling and moving account of Stalinist repression in the U.S.S.R, this heavily autobiographical novel will give you a unique insight into the day-to-day lives of gulag occupants. Despite the harrowing theme, the novel is charged through with a sense of humanity's strength, as the 'zeks' adapt to and face the adversity of inhumane camp conditions. I would certainly recommend this rewarding read, especially as it was delivered with only 1 day of purchase and in perfectly readable condition.

Hope Dies Last: The Autobiography of Alexander ... by Dubcek, Alexander Hardback
    28 Dec, 2017
A unique, fascinating autobiography...but by no means 'light reading'
'Hope Dies Last' is the autobiography of a man who almost single-handedly took on the U.S.S.R - one of the most comprehensive world superpowers in history. As such, this is a unique and very special read from a unique and special man, whose political acumen and morality was unparalleled. However this is far from a 'light read'. There are many complex political and economic concepts outlined in his narrative of Czechoslovak history, and the facts/dates/names come thick and fast throughout. I would recommend this to those with a particular interest in Czechoslovak history or in modern Russian history; many historians agree that the Prague Spring, although it ended in Soviet triumph of sorts, signalled the beginning of the end of the U.S.S.R.
