2 of 2 found this helpful An excellent movie about the height of the British Empire in Africa. Only slightly Hollywoodized (No battle stops when a major character steps out of his room to join the battle!) Charleton Heston was a perfect choice for the role of 'Chinese' Gordon, Ralph Richardson did a great job portraying PM Gladstone, and Sir Lawrence Olivier did a masterful job as the Mahdi. If you want to gain an insight into the contemporary troubles of the middle east, then watch this movie!

Gary Cooper is perfect in the role of Will Kane, retiring sheriff, who, upon learning that his arch enemy is coming to gun him down, refuses to run away. Grace Kelly does a great job in the role of his non-violent, Quaker wife, who comes to understand why her husband will not back down from this fight. This is arguably one of, if not the, best western ever.
