A well-loved tv programme condensed into book format - splendid!
This is a splendid book, at least for aficionados of the programme. Just the Introduction by V C-M is excellent - I look forward to many happy hours of working through it's considerable, compelling contents.

"An entertainment, a brilliant literary achievement and a triumph of the imagination"
One reviewer quoted on the cover of this 1980 Penguin edition wrote that " . . . Hofstadter writes directly and playfully for the lay reader". Having only so far reached the beginning of Chapter 1 and found the introduction to 'formal systems' to be compelling, I am relishing the rest of this "vast book". I am certainly finding good value and can recommend it wholeheartedly.
