The best little device for an old way of thinking
4 of 8 found this helpful When we think about managing the temperature in your home, one tends to forget that the technology in their thermostat is very old and basic. Some newer installations offer a better selection of digital and programmable thermostats but still they can be daunting and complicated. The Nest is nothing like that. The nest would be something I could buy my Mother and not worry that she cannot manage it. In fact, it is more similar to the older dial type models that my Mom's generation is used to.
Not only did the Nest save us money but the features are simply amazing. I have not even had to actually program a schedule because after the initial "Learning" phase, the temperature adjusts accordingly. The motion sensor will know there is someone home and even lights up the gorgeous display when walking by it with a very large readout of the temperature in the home. The fact that I can set it to know when my phone is not in the vicinity of the home really helps when there are those times when I forget to set it to away; the Nest does it Automatically! When you get home, it turns on for you! You could even go into the app on your phone when you know you are almost home and take your nest out of the Away mode to cool it down for when you get there.
The Nest also saves you money by letting you know how long it will take to get to the temperature change you are making. If it is 75 in the house and just a bit too hot for you, don't crank it down to 60 to cool it off. It doesn't make the temperature get cooler faster, just drop it down a couple of degrees and it will tell you how long until your home will get to that temp.
For example, the humidity hits and the Nest is set to 75 but you are getting a bit too uncomfortable. Just turn it down to 74 and it says the temp will be 74 in 1 hour and 15 minutes. So, turning it down to 60 won't do anything but keep cooling it down even after it is at a comfortable temp because most likely you have forgotten to turn it back up and then you are suddenly freezing LOL.
I think a major advantage is that in our 2 story home in the summer, the upstairs gets very warm and the downstairs will stay cool. When we go to bed, we tend to turn the temps down. If we forget to do this once we are in bed, I can pick up my phone, open the App and turn the temperature down or even just kick in the Fan to cool it down a bit with airflow.
After all of those things that are already amazing, you get a monthly report from your nest to let you know how you did in saving energy. You can also view your daily temperature readings through the app. I love these things since I like to know that I spent my money well and am doing the best I can to conserve energy AND keep my home a comfortable temperature.
Installation was insanely easy. We replaced a standard programmable Honeywell thermostat. We have Electric AC and Gas Furnace. The wiring diagram was so simple that I had it done in 15 minutes. What took the longest is making sure it was mounted well on the wall since our hole was a bit strange. I needed to pre-drill a few holes but still, an average handy-person can do it.
All in all, this little device may seem a bit pricey in comparison to an average thermostat, but I promise you, the options and ease of use far make up for that initial price. The energy saving alone in the first year and the technical conveniences quickly make it worth the money!
