The best history of Kew village
The best book there is on the history of Kew. Well, I would say that, wouldn't I - my husband is the author. Nevetheless, it IS the best book on this historic and beautiful west London 'village', which is so much more than just the Royal Botanic Gardens. It is informative and well written.

A young artist's experiences in WWI
Pat Barker is as brilliant as ever in this moving account of a young art student's life at the approach and the early days of World War One. When the war starts he joins up as an ambulance driver in Belgium, giving an unusual insight into the world of the teams attempting against the odds to deal with the mounting numbers of wounded, just behind the front line.
A minor character in the book is the real-life Henry Tonks, surgeon and art professor at the Slade. He was to pioneer attempts to reconstruct the hideously damaged faces of the wounded soldiers. His brilliant if disturbing series of drawings can be seen in the V&A museum.
