ONE THRILLING RIDE FROM BEGINNING TO END
4 of 4 found this helpful I'm one of those racing fans that the tracks just hate. I love watching the beauty of the horses running, & then I worry about the horses that don't win. I never bet or get into the money or snobbery aspect of racing which is probably why I saw the movie & didn't bother to read the book until recently. I liked the movie, but I purely LOVED the book! It was one of those books that you try to stretch out as long as you can, yet you can't wait to get back to reading, & then miss it like heck when you do finish.
For starters, Laura Hillenbrand's writing is remarkable. Even though I thought I knew the story-and there was so much more to it-it still held my attention from the very first page to the last. Her choice of words was particularly descriptive. The train didn't puff into the station; it groaned. In the match race between Seabiscuit & War Admiral, War Admiral "scratched & tore at the track" & Seabiscuit "drove over the track, his forelegs pulling the homestretch under his body & flinging it back behind him." These are perfect action words. Her description of trainer, Tom Smith is pure poetry: "He had a colorless translucence about him that made him seem as if he were in the earliest stages of progressive invisibility." Reading the author's descriptions of the races isn't like watching the race. It is more like viewing it from the back of the horse, & all the excitement is that much more heightened.
"Seabiscuit" engages your heart from the start--for the characters & certainly for the horses. And when Red Pollard is severely hurt-which he is again & again, when Seabiscuit is injured at Santa Anita while under George Woolf & later when Woolf is killed, your heart your heart cries. Many times I had to remind myself that these events were unfolding more than 60 years ago because Hillenbrand makes them seem so immediate. Last, but certainly not least, is the inspiration of the story. What was it that made Red Pollard get back on a horse after nearly dying twice. (I do wish she had mentioned what happened to Modern Youth, the horse Red was thrown from in the barn.) Where did they get the stamina to continue? Whenever I think I can't go on, I'll think of these people. Some reviewers say even those who aren't into horse racing will like this book. I'm not sure I agree, but reading this book might just make a racing fan out of you.

IT'S ALL GOOD WITH THIS SWEET BEARINGTON/BOYD'S BEAR!
I was drawn to the Hugaby Bear by Bearington because 1) I had been collecting the 6 & 8 inch bears from Bearingtom. & 2) I just love her outfit. All Bearington & Boyd's Bears are well made, & often come wearing "Bearwear". Hugaby's outfit is just as cute as shown, & features a stuffed heart attached to her paw with "Hugs to You" embroidered on it. The size makes it easier to group together in a smaller space, something I need to consider. I highly recommend any bear made by Bearington (Now owned by Boyd's) if you have no objection to their not being made in the U.S. . That's the good. The bad is...There is no bad!

WELCOME TO THE MYSTICAL WORLD OF CATS
1 of 1 found this helpful I only recently learned of this cat series, having become slightly disenchanted with one other feline series I’d been reading. First off, it’s always a good idea to read a series in order rather than coming in once the characters have been introduced & situations explained. In Cat on the Edge, Joe Grey, the gray & white Tom, who had been rescued from certain death by animal-loving bachelor, Clyde, discovers powers beyond the normal cat. The book opens with Joe witnessing a murder committed one night in an alley in a California seaside town. For some reason the murderer chases him, trying to kill him. After a couple more incidents, Joe decides that it would be best to leave home in order to protect Clyde & the other dogs & cats that live there. While he’s fending for himself, he meets Dulcie & discovers that she too has the same powers that he has. Dulcie has also seen the murder & is running from the murderer. The wife of one of the accomplices has the ability to turn herself into a cat & back again. If all this sounds rather bazaar in the telling, Murphy manages to pull it off very well with her fluid writing & attention to detail. (I could have done without the detailed references to the eating of birds & mice however.) I was reminded somewhat of Watership Down & the portrayal from the rabbits point of view. I love the scene where Joe meets Dulcie & discovers that she can talk & understand. It is just so poignant.
The book is told almost entirely from the cat’s point of view, though Clyde & Dulcie’s “mom” (Clyde’s friend) have their turn. It is strictly a “what if...” kind of story that pulls you into the mystical world of cats & we know who the murderer is from the start. The story centers on how Joe & Dulcie get the humans to discover what is going on. I must admit, since reading this book, I look at my five cats a bit differently, half expecting one of them to morph into a human or phone me in the middle of the night. I definitely enjoyed this book enough to continue on with the next.
