The War of the Worlds DVD (2010) Gene Barry, Haskin (DIR) cert PG Amazing Value

Timeless Quality Entertainment.
Ground breaking sci-fi film , ahead of its’ time - even if the war machines hovered rather than walked on a tripod arrangement as HG Wells describes. Actress Ann Robinson’s commentary contribution is one of the more interesting such ‘special features’ extras on dvd’s, as is the inclusion of the 1939 Orson Welles radio broadcast, which caused widespread panic in many US towns and cities where listeners missed the beginning of the programme. You can understand why there were questions raised in the senate!
Gordon Lightfoot - Troubadour / Live (DVD)

Duplicate Tiracklisting!
Beware that the same 15 tracks and the same concert are also available on 'Gordon Lightfoot Live on Stage - Greatest Hits Live' (Laser Media release). This has totally different artwork front and back. The songs are of course brilliant, but unfortunately the final track -'Canadian Railroad Trilogy' is chopped off before the slower middle section, and it is all so very abrupt and disappointing. The remainder is very entertaining, and value for money at the price I paid.

The Septuagenarian- Still going Strong
This was Gordon Lightfoot's first album of the 80's and was recorded in the main with the legendary band. It sustains a real feel of his previous albums, but yet with a new and fresher contemporary sharpness. Some interesting keyboard work lend some of this quality to both 'Sea of Tranquility & 'Whisper My Name'. Other highlights are Pee Wee Charles (on steel), together with Gordon's ghostly whistling efforts on 'Ghost of Cape Horn'- these effects are really pleasing and well worked out. 'Make way for the Lady' is jazz-like, but with an easy listening feel which effectively slows the mood. Then a tender and heartfelt lovesong as only Gord can work it- 'If You Need Me' together with the title track should really have been deserving of singles release. Then a real lollipop- a glorious cover version of Leroy Van Dyke's 'Auctioneer' from 1956. Great to sing along to- if you can! Nick de Caro's lovely orchestral arrangement for 'On the High Seas' - which moves seamlessly from major to minor key- once again is utterly complementary to Gord's lyrical writing. 'Mr Rock of Ages' - an apposite title for Mr Lightfoot - now in his 78th year- is granite- like and thoughtful. Once again major to minor key changes are in stylish evidence. All in all this is a needed- if modest- addition to the Gordon Lightfoot catalogue. Strongly Recommended.
