We, of Our Bounty: A History of the Sheffield C... by Tolley, George S. Hardback
    25 Mar, 2020
Early Sheffield: power to the people, well some of them anyway!
This is a fairly esoteric tome, you either need to be keen to discover more about early Sheffield history or how political power started to devolve from the post Norman / Tudor aristocracy to the developing artisan / middle class in a small provincial township. From the standpoint of an amateur genealogist with an interest in local history it provides a well written and balanced history of two early organisations ( the Church Burgesses and the Capital Burgesses) which shaped and underpinned the early development of Sheffield from a small medieval hamlet until the introduction of local government as we now know it in the 19th century. For the political historian it is an object lesson in how astute locals were able to capitalise on good relations with local magnates and circumstances. They were able to assume responsibility for their future and slowly but surely shape it via a proto local authority; not a democracy but inching that way and continuing to do so to this day.
A history of Greater Birmingham: Down to 1830, Skipp, Victor, Used; Good Book

    Birmingham to 1830 - A Potted History
A very reasonable if now dated, though no less valuable, history of Birmingham and its growth from a collection of small settlements to Empires workshop and second city. Skipp writes passionately, knowledgeably and above all readably about a subject which comes through as dear to his heart and which gives the reader a pretty fair impression of the life and times of Birmingham up until the cusp of the great 19th century era of reform. The only criticism to be made is one concerning the integration of illustrations into the page layout, they tend to be small and appear planted on the page in a higgledy-piggledy fashion. On the plus side the illustrations are numerous and atmospheric and there are a lot of them! Leaving aside typographical issues this remains a worthwhile and informative read 40 years after it was published and a tribute to the author's scholarship.
