BRITISH ROCK 'N' ROLL IN IT'S INFANCY
From a man who played trumpet in the Forces, then as a sidesman in Johnny Dankworth's Orchestman, this collection of Pop history shows how jazz influenced musicians and session men jumped on the bandwagon on the American invasion of rock 'n' roll music to the UK shores in order to earn some extra money. Barry went on his own and formed the John Barry Seven which had a largely string beat sound augmented by Vic Flick twangy guitar , the former which Buddy Holly had created earlier, and the latter a re-creation of the familiar Duane Eddy gimmick. It worked very well, but after the success of his score for 'Beat Girl', cult movie starring Adam Faith, Barry used his obvious talents writing more soundtracks, firstly The James Bond Theme. This compilation was put out by the re-issue specialist label Jasmine, and along with informative sleeve notes, it tells the story of a great artist's rise to fame and worldwide recognition. Some of it's embarrassing by modern standards perhaps, but everybody has to begin somewhere! A true historical collector's piece.

NOT REALLY QUITE UP TO SCRATCH
Some bits were missing in my collection and this was an expensive way to get them. I ripped what I wanted then sold it on. Not the best work from Duane though -- more than the usual vocal bits were added to what should have been left as pure instrumentals, I suspect in an effort to try and pull some poor choices out of a bag of what RCA wanted to record and not Duane. The Jamie years with Lee Hazlewood were certainly the best!.

A GOOD TRY, BUT THEY SHOULD STICK WITH THEIR OWN STUFF
Like so many others available, these are fair attempts at re-creating the Shadows sound. They are a good and talented group, but there's seems to be something lacking -- perhaps the mellowness that Hank Marvin always seemed to produce. Costly for what it is.
