WINGS - AT THE SPEED OF SOUND CD (1976) CDP 7 48199 2
    22 Oct, 2020
    Underrated and worthwhile
This is one of the most underrated albums by Wings. It contains four great tracks - two of them released as singles (Let 'Em In and Silly Love Songs) and two that weren't (Beware My Love and Wino Junko). It might be relevant to point out that these are the four longest tracks on the album, suggesting that McCartney himself found those to be the ones with enough musical depth to sustain interest - that's not something that I can state definitively. In addition, there are a number of "Okay" songs and a handful of Fillers - but the Fillers in this case are less objectionable than on most releases. The bonus tracks also fall into this quasi-okay zone - I don't consider any of the three to be "undiscovered gems" but they aren't bad, either. If you already have a collection like Wingspan, buy this for those two non-single tracks and count anything you like from the rest as a bonus; if you don't, then you get two hit tracks as an even bigger bonus.

Tracks are not all the same as their sources
Many of the tracks on this CD appear to have been rerecorded or remixed. I have some of the source albums and singles and the vocal performances and sometimes backing tracks are noticeably different, and in a lot cases, missing the charm and sparkle of the original. For those with less-sharp musical memories, this may be perfectly acceptable; for those more like myself, some tracks are still worth collecting given how hard it is to obtain the source albums - but revise your expectations before listening.

Buy it with eyes open to its limitations
You may not realize how interesting a compilation this is until you read the liner notes. This is essentially 2 1/2 albums on 2 CDs with a little extra on the side. The album elements are excellent - better than I remembered in some cases, as good as remembered in others. I would have liked more from "O Zambesi" but I knew going in that this contained only half of that hard-to-find CD. There were two negatives, and I need to explain them for anyone reading this to understand why they have not impacted the score. The first is "Konkaroo" - the version here is not the one that appears on various compilations and is a less-polished, less commercially-appealing version. Not only do I not care about this track, but I have the single version on a various-artists CD, so this is a trivial complaint, and may even have been a selling point if I had known it in advance. The other negative is also about expectations, and is a little more substantial. The version of "Dreaded Morococzy Bind" included here is NOT the same as the one that appeared on the Prince's Trust / Countdown compilation back in the late 70s, and this was a track that I -DID- want - a fact that was definitely disappointing. That said, this was (according to my investigations) the version that originally appeared on the Dragon LP of which it is part. So this was a matter of misplaced expectation on my part, not a problem with the compilation. Overall, if you want "Get That Jive" and "Sunshine", and the albums from which they derive, and "Are You Old Enough" and half the album it comes from, this is the package you want to buy - but buy it with your eyes wide open to its limitations.
