Bat Detector Review
I would have given 5 stars if construction included a plastic enclosure and a headphone socket.
As it is, the enclosure is a sturdy cardboard affair which does not do the circuit justice.
I would strongly recommend that you build the projected into a small plastic enclosure and include a headphone socket – this will involve soldering and modifying the wiring connections. In my construction, I added the option to switch between the microphone and a bnc signal input socket.
The assembly instructions includes the circuit diagram showing the heart of the bat detector formed by a CD2003 and 555 timer feeding the output signal to a LM386 amplifier IC, all powered from a PP3 9V battery.
In operation, the volume control includes the on/off function, while the frequency potentiometer has an adjustment range (detection) from ~15kHz to 100kHz. Without getting too technical, the microphone signal is mixed with the set 555 timer frequency to produce an audio signal having a frequency of the difference between the two.
I’ve not yet used the device outdoors to detect bats, but with indoor use it detects the ultrasonic noise given off by various electronic devices (TV, computer, laptop, lighting etc). The unit comes with comprehensive assembly and use instructions. The packaging warns that it is not a toy and not suitable for children under 14 years of age; but with supervision I would expect a child of 8 and above to be capable of assembling the unit within the supplied cardboard enclosure, making an interesting and educational project.

Good value kit ….but…

At the input between Live and Neutral is a 10nF capacitor and from Live to Earth and Neutral to Earth is a 300V varistor. Live and Neutral then pass through a common-mode choke – after the choke is a 10nF capacitor Live to Neutral and again from Live to Earth and Neutral to Earth is a 300V varistor. Live and Neutral then pass through another common-mode choke – after the choke is a 100nF capacitor Live to Neutral and again from Live to Earth and Neutral to Earth is a 300V varistor.
The image shows the 300V varistors supplied with the kit to be high voltage ceramic capacitors. The image also shows the three capacitors between Live and Neutral to be safety capacitors. The capacitors supplied with the kit have no approval marks showing them to be X1/X2 safety capacitors.
Despite the above shortcomings, the kit is good value for the PCB and common-mode chokes alone.
My advice to those building this kit is to fit approved safety capacitors and if replacing the supplied varistors with capacitors, ensure that they are approved Y2 safety capacitors.
The current rating is claimed to be up to 18A, while the PCB tracks and chokes may withstand this current, I doubt that the input/output terminals could handle more than 6A based on their size.
Finally, the through Earth connection relies on a single narrow PCB track – given that under fault conditions this may pass a high current, I would strongly recommend that the input and output Earths are connect by a separate conductor of the appropriate cross sectional area.

Superb DVR image quality
I purchased this unit to upgrade my ageing home security cctv system – it being an old hard-wired system with fairly low resolution images.
Although the dvr can be wired to a router to give remote access etc – it does not rely on the router wi-fi to receive the wireless camera signals. The dvr has its own antennas and acts as a self-contained wireless dvr. There is no need to pair each of the cameras to the dvr as this has already been done at the factory – making the system plug & play. Once switched on, the unit detects the cameras soon after power is applied to each of the cameras.
The received signal strength displayed for each installed camera is 3 out of 4 bars, with each camera being about 10m and through one wall from the base unit.
The image quality is excellent, I can’t see myself needing to upgrade this system.
With each camera set to capture the highest quality, the unit is recording at a respectable rate of 15 frames/second for each camera. However the live image out is slightly delayed and being refreshed at somewhere around 6 frames/second – giving a somewhat jerky effect. But not to worry as the recorded frame rate gives a smooth playback.
Recording all 4 cameras at the highest quality fills a 1TB hdd in around 8 days.
My only gripes are that the unit does not have video out on a RCA/phono connector – it being HDMI and vga, and there is no facility to capture audio.
I can’t praise this system highly enough, and would expect to pay double for a hard-wired system of this quality, and much, much more for a wireless version.
