A Fascinating Insight
The film is a fascinating insight into a little known episode in the American Civil War; the forming of an exclusively black regiment on the Union side and the tribulations they encounter being taken seriously as a fighting force. They are led by an affable, though flawed, white officer Col Robert Gould Shaw(Matthew Broderick) guided by his more realistic second in command Maj Cabot Forbes (Carey Elwes). Fine performances are turned in by the seen-it-all-before older black soldier Sgt Maj John Rawlins(Morgan Freeman) and the fiery, resentful ex slave Private Trip (Denzel Washington). Ultimately another sad indictment of war but told in a fascinating way.
