Movie Toons: Treasure Island (DVD, 2002, Full Frame)

The More Faithful Adaptation
Four stars for the Voice acting, Accurate Adaptation, Emotional Impact, Slight Changes to the Ending As far as adaptations of Treasure Island are concerned, THIS animated film is the most faithful one put to the screen. Of course there are changes made, such as having one intro that’s pointless, and some important scenes from the novel are missing. But, this movie does capture the more uncomfortable parts of the story. When compared to Frasier Heston’s much loved 1990 live action version, which incorporated some jarring, jolly music during some intense/scary moments and Blind Pew’s attack on the tavern was treated like slapstick comedy. This cartoon does know when to leave you distressed or get your heart racing. It’s all thanks to the voice acting and the musical score. Additionally, it’s a rarity for other adaptations to actually reveal Jim’s dad before he dies, showing Jim and his mother go to the hamlet only for help to be denied them, and Long John Silver abusing Jim on the end of his rope tether. Many adaptations tend to shy away from these particular sequences. Even the DVD cover is an accurate depiction of Jim and Silver’s toxic relationship. I’ll also credit this adaptation for the changes made to Jim’s statement about Long John during the ending. I’ll avoid spoilers, but let’s just say he put it the way Jim’s novel counterpart should have done. Although my feelings about Stevenson’s Treasure Island are mixed, I bought this DVD for three specific reasons. One is it’s not being accessible on YouTube anymore. I am a video editor so I now have to rip the footage. The second was to watch my two favourite characters: Billy Bones and Dick Johnson. Billy has depth to his emotions whilst Dick is an under appreciated victim of Silver’s manipulation but suffered the most for it, (he also has an aesthetically pleasing character design and a soothing Celtic accent.) It’s criminal that both of these guys are slept on by the T.I. fandom. Thirdly, the bonus material was said to feature a blooper reel so I was curious about what context they came under. Do they mean bloopers as in deleted scenes, or is it footage of the voice actors goofing up? Could be either. 🤣 Sure it’s strange for a Treasure Island detractor to buy an adaptation and still recommend it to the novel’s devotees. If you want my opinion, I’ll declare that my preferred adaptations are Takarajima the anime (1978) and the Burbank cartoon (1986.) Those versions helped in reducing my tumultuous feelings about Stevenson’s plot line. But, if you are a Treasure Island fan, or if you are studying it, you should add this version to your watchlist. Just be sure to skip the intro as it barely adds substance.
