    Life Before Eccleston
Watching this when it first came out I enjoyed it. Doctor Who was back (as it should be) and updated beautifully. However after the backlash I started to believe the negative press. Too americanised, too overblown, too slick, too twee. I eventually discarded it and didn't watch it for years. After Christopher Eccleston brought him back successfully I felt curious enough to revisit the TV Movie and surprised at how much I enjoyed it. It is a classic story that is well constructed for both a new and an old audience. Apart from Eric Robert's over-the-top performance, the cast are sympathetic enough to engage with. Yet I do believe that they were right not to commission a series from this 'pilot' as it gave the BBC chance to tweak the material to the outstanding level they produced in 2005. The story is a welcome filler for those years the programme was undeservedly absent from our screens. The extras on the disc are also a welcome addition. There are also a welcome abundance of extras on the dvd which demonstrate the enthusiasm behind the new project as well as the grief from the backlash. A definite welcome addition to the Doctor Who canon! And who knows, maybe Paul McGann's Doctor will crop up again, he's met his past selves before!
