One Woman's Amazing Life
This is an autobiography which is very different in style to the usual types. It is more like snapshots of the main episodes in what was a thrilling [and dangerous] childhood in Kenya.
It moves on to the heroines adventures in early aviation and her great successes as a horse trainer.
I first read this book a few months ago when I found a paperback version of it at my brother in law's house.
When they were young both he and his wife spent time in Kenya doing voluntary work. A relative gave them this book as an interesting present, sometime back in the 1980's.
I was delighted to obtain the illustrated version, which brought the story very much more alive to me.
My own hero of the book is Beryl's childhood pet dog, Buller.
He had a more thrilling and dangerous life than even the childhood Beryl. His abduction by a Leopard one night and his misfortunes on a Warthog hunt endeared him to me forever.
It was a real tearjerker when after her father's farm became bankrupt Beryl set off on horseback to start a new life.
Her old life, left behind, included poor old Buller, under his cairn of stones...
Ernest Hemingway is reported on the paperback version as stating it was a 'bloody good book.'
How right he was.
Although the author was described in life as a difficult character she had a wonderful story to tell.
