Inspiring guide for beginner/internediate
This engaging book is beautifully illustrated with very careful attention to faithful reproduction of the water colour palette. It covers technique for landscape, water ina ll it’s forms and flowers. I have read it like a novel. As each demonstration unfolds it is like a thrilling plot as you yearn to see how it all turns out. The approach is similar to the best cook book with lists of all tools, materials and equipment provided with tips on setting up, then a systematic run through the construction & execution of the painting. The standard of painting is really fine and it has definitely inspired me to paint. There is only one criticism & that is there is perhaps not quite enough appraisal of the subjects and analysis of the artists’ rational for choice of technique. So we are quite often told ‘mix this and that and apply in this place’ In other words some of the greatest skills of the authors which is how they mentally plan use of paint is not always revealed. However, I have learnt that as in the renaissance ateliers, just faithfully copying the masters without knowing their thoughts still produced brilliant results. Thoroughly recommended
