Pioneer BDP-LX91 Reference Blu-ray Player - 7.1 Channel Analogue Output
30 Jan, 2017
The Ultimate Blu Ray Player
Make no mistake, The £2000 Pioneer BDP-LX91 is the Daddy of Blu Ray Players! It may not be the most expensive player ever (Denon made one which originally retailed for £4k!!) but it has the size, weight and above all, the performance to stamp its mark as the ultimate Blu Ray Player. It weighs 16kg! That's amplifier territory and just trying to lift it onto your shelf is an effort but you instantly feel the quality of this giant. It looks very similar to the cheaper LX51 and LX71 but this is a totally different beast. The components used are of the highest quality (7 Wolfson DACs used for each channel for example produce the very highest end audio) and the video/audio circuitry is kept totally separate to ensure the best possible performance. I have read dozens of Blu Ray player reviews which state a pure digital signal should always look the same no matter how expensive the player playing it. They say a £100 player should be able to produce the same quality image as a £2000 player such as this and it's only the DVD upscaling of the more expensive player which will produce noticeable improvements. Well I, Or should I say my eyes disagree. I have owned many Blu Ray players before and on my 60" Pioneer Kuro TV, none have looked as good as the Pionee LX91. Blacks are deeper, images are sharper and cleaner (no noise in the image) and you just know when you are watching a Blu Ray that it doesn't come much better than this. Today you can pick up one of these for around £350-£500 and although that is still a huge amount to pay for a Blu Ray player, especially now 4K is on the market, if you have a large collection of discs and want the very best you can get, then the Pioneer is a good investment. HIGHLY RECOMMENDED.

Hamilton Khaki Navy Frogman Automatic H77705145 - Blue Dial - Exc. Condition
17 Jun, 2020
Hamilton Affordable Luxury
Hamilton are a brand that have received more positive attention over the past 10 years for not only their contemporary and varied designs but the quality of their watches which far exceeds their prices. The Khaki Frogman is one such watch. It is a bit of a marmite watch in so much that you'll either love it's unusual design or you'll hate it but the customer it's aimed at (the sportman, the sailor, the diver or just the man that likes to be noticed wherever he goes) will undoubtably love it's bold, rugged design. Using a Swiss ETA movement and heavily engraved caseback, it offers class and reliability from every angle. Suited to the bigger wrist, this is a watch you can wear on the beach or at the bar in the evening. A great timepiece for the actionman who has class to boot. Hamilton watches are the definition Affordable Luxury.
Sony HT-IS100 Home Theatre System
11 Jan, 2017
The Sony HT-IS100 Home Theatre System is small in size but big in performance
Two reasons made me choose this minuscule system for my lounge. Firstly my wife didn't want huge speakers all around the room and secondly the reviews I'd read where promising. I unpacked the system and immediately was gobsmacked by the size of the 5 speakers. They are tiny, and have the footprint of a (square!!) golf ball. But they are also weighty and have the feel of quality. You do think that there is no way these will produce any kind of room filling sound though.....but how wrong you would be! The subwoofer which is also the heart of the system housing also the amplifier and all speaker/HDMI connections is a tall narrow unit with a high gloss black finish. It has a downwards firing woofer and also an upward firing speaker which handles the midrange sounds. Connection is simple as all the speakers are colour coded so just plug the blue speaker cable into the blue speaker socket etc. Plug in your HDMI cables from your sources (Sky, Blu Ray player, games console etc) and then one HDMI goes out to your screen. If you're lucky you'll also have the calibration microphone included which sets up all the speaker levels automatically for you. The only downside of the subwoofer is that the display is on the top, as opposed to the side so it is very difficult to see when you are sitting down. The 'eye' for the remote is on the base of the centre speaker so is easy to control. Choosing the audio and running a dolby digital 5.1 soundtrack through the system once calibrated is amazing. It defies belief when you hear the huge sound coming from apparently nowhere. Turn it up and it just gets better. Filling a decent sized room with full bodied surround sound. It may not have the finesse of a full sized speaker/amp system, but it produces sound far better than you have any right to expect from it's size. If you want good surround sound but cannot or don't want to accommodate large speakers in your room, then this is a very good solution. Highly Recommended.
