Semper Fidelis: A Novel of the Roman Empire, Ruth Downie

Excellent historical fiction set in old .

An underappreciated series of historical fiction set in Britain under Roman rule. The primary characters are a Roman military physician and his never to be underestimated native wife. The characters are well formed and the action and mysteries are excellent. I especially appreciate the humor. This could be unrelentingly grim but the author realizes that even in the worst situations people can appreciate the oddities of life that can bring a smile. Highly recommended.
