Excellent product with unique feature set and flawless fidelity.
After exhaustive research off and on over a year long period, this is the only DAC I found with the features I wanted. I am thankful TEAC offered this feature set and made it of such high quality.
Some may balk at the retail price, but IMO it still offers a good value. Not only is the DAC itself awesome, but critically TEAC designed the analog portions with respect so it offers flawless fidelity end-to-end. The UD-301 doesn't color the sound in any way, and doesn't leave anything out either.
The specific combo of features I needed that I couldn't find in any other product are as follows:
~High quality USB DAC (capable of any bit/baud you could want, including actual-for-realz DSD)
~High quality headphone amp
~Balanced out with variable output
Of course the TEAC UD-301 also has other selectable digital sources that include coax and optical. It also has unbalanced outputs and the choice of line-level output. The form factor is perfect for me, as it nestles between the stands (and underneath the screens) of my dual-LCD monitor computer desktop. I have a pair of Tannoy Reveal 601a powered studio monitors connected to the balanced outs from the DAC.
The only criticism I can possibly muster is that the volume knob (plastic with seemingly no other support than the potentiometer it fits on) doesn't feel as great as the rest of the unit, but the pot itself seems to be high quality and functions flawlessly.
The TEAC UD-301 is an excellent choice for someone like me who wants impeccable desktop audio with powered studio monitors. I just listen to music, but this DAC is more than capable enough for any level of actual studio work as the mains output control for a DAW. In fact, this may very well be the only stand-alone DAC like this capable of variable balanced output. Since it also has unbalanced outputs and lets the user choose line-level out, it should work for everyone.

Unique solution that is compact and portable
This switched 4-port hub is exactly what I needed to easily control connections to Arduinos and Raspberry Pi's during development.
For anyone who needs this functionality, get this item. I was impressed by its quality. Just realize that it doesn't support USB 3.0.
