Great DVD, Brilliant Easter Eggs...
If you're reading this you probably already know pretty much what you'll get if you buy this so I'll give you a quick overview of the contents. This DVD set contains the all the promo videos David made during his time with RCA, EMI, BMG and Virgin Records up until 1999's "Seven". Chronologicaly it contains quite literaly everything from "John, I'm Only Dancing" right through to "Survive", with the frustrating exceptions of "Little Drummer Boy/Peace On Earth" plus the rarly seen "Real Cool World" and "When the Wind Blows". In the absenece of promo videos earlier tracks, as well as "Rebel Rebel" and "Young Americans", these songs are represented by TV performances or, in the case "Wild Is the Wind" and "Space Oddity", the respective promotional videos made to promote their after the fact re-releases as singles. As videos were never made for the "Knock on Wood", "Sound and Vision", "Beauty and the Beast", "Breaking Glass", "Crystal Japan", "Scary Monsters", "Up the Hill Backwards", "Alabama Song", "Cat People (Putting Out Fire)", "Tonight", "This Is Not America" and "Dance Magic" singles these tracks are perhaps not to conspicous by the absence, though "Cat People (Putting Out Fire)" is included in it's "Serious Moonlight" concert video version. Frustratingly BBC TV performances exist of both "Alabama Song" and "Cat People (Putting Out Fire)" so their none appearence is a shame, especialy in the light that 4 of the included TV performances were licenced from that corporation. Now to my main reason for writing this review the DVD "easter eggs". There appear to be 9 of these in total these being: 01: An alternative video for "Blue Jean" (hard to find) 02: The "Jazzin' For Blue Jean" short film 03: A Mandarin language "7 Years In Tibet" 04: An early 70's TV interview 05: A re-mixed version of "Miracle Goodnight" (poor quality visuals which look like a VHS work-in-progress, this is difficult to find) 06: An alternate take of "Oh! You Pretty Things" 07: An alternative edit of the "Day In, Day Out" video (as used to pad out the "Day In, Day Out" video EP) 08: A live in concert "Survive" 09: And lastly a pointless advert for the "Ziggy Stardust" DVD (this last one is so easy to find I didn't even concider it an easter egg when I first found it) I won't spoil it for you by revealing their locations, so happy hunting...

Utter Failure
Just awful. Try hard whimsy that simply bores. Thought film was finally coming to an end, checked time left and it was 42 minutes into 87! Avoid. There is a reason this was never reviewed and barely promoted

Pointless
OK, let's get this straight: I am not here to criticize the music contained on this CD, I am a Beatles fan and yes there is some good stuff to br found on here. However what does bother me about this album is the blatant cynicism of it's release. The fact that it was compiled not with the band's fans in mind but with the sort of person who knows of the Beatles and wants some Beatles music for the car/for doing housework/as an unimaginative present for their 60something relative. OK, maybe there is nothing wrong with that (not everybody is a music lover, not everybody cares/thinks enough about art to have oppinions on it or search out the best) but couldn't Apple direct these people to the more comprensive, eclectic and frankly better "1962-1966", "1967-1970" and "Past Masters" compilations? I mean all they'd need to do is put big stickers on the front of them saying something like "the Very Best of Beatles". But no we had to have this, I mean if it wasn't for the sleep inducing "Beatles Love Songs" double LP (truly the nadir of those EMI's 1970's Beatles cash-ins) or the dull "Beatles Ballads" LP (which doesn't include "Elenour Rigby" or "In My Life" but does find time for "Here Comes the Sun"!!!???!!!) this would rank as my least fave Beatles album ever. This album smacks of money grabbing on Apple's part. But shouldn't we be used to that? I mean who needs remastered and repackaged versions of the propper albums (where necesary doubles containing the mono, European stereo and USA stereo mixes) when we can have this album or the history re-writing "Anthology" and "Let It Be - Naked" sets which sell fans re-mixed versions of material they already own on bootlegs, or the pointless "Yellow Submarine Songtrack" album (I adore the original "Yellow Submarine" album, it contains 3 of the Beatles best "lost" songs and George Martin's orchestral score, which takes up the second half of the album, is wonderfull)? Then again I recently realized that here Britain it's only 4 years until the Beatles music begins falling into the public domain so maybe you can't blame Apple for trying to squeeze that last few extra pounds form their assets can you? After all, in only 12 years time every garage and news agent will no doubt be flogging you bargain CDs of "Abbey Road" and "Beatles for Sale" for a lot less than we're currently paying for the "official" editions...
