Real feel for Devon life in Elizabethan times
The seaside resort of "Westward Ho!", in Devon, got its name from this book so I was interested in finding out why.
This book was written in 1855 and is about the adventures of a man from Bideford in the reign of Elizabeth I. It starts out mainly as a love story but becomes a history of the battles between England and Spain at that time. It contains well known characters such as Sir Francis Drake and Sir Walter Raleigh and discoveries that were important at that time e.g. gold and tobacco.
The picture painted, by Charles Kingsley, of Bideford and the surrounding area felt very authentic for the period. I could imagine riding out on a horse from Bideford and stopping off at a stately home or suffering from scurvy after months at sea. However, some of Kingsley's attitudes were very Victorian and, whilst most of them caused me amusement, some of the references to the natives of South America (and indeed the Spanish and the Catholics at this time) could be offensive to some people.
This version has 688 pages so it is quite a long novel. Themes covered are;
Life and scenery of North Devon in the Elizabethan period
Loyalty towards Queen Elizabeth I
The fear of catholic spies and invasion
What it was like to be a sailor in that period
The riches of the New World
The relationship between England and Spain at the time
The Spanish Inquisition
The Spanish Armada
I think that you would get the most out of this if you were an excellent reader and very knowledgeable about classic literature and foreign languages (it contains the Devon dialect, 16th Century English, Spanish, and Latin). Having said that, I am not and still enjoyed the story and the feel I got of Devon and South America at this period in time. I often couldn't understand sections of the background information but this did not stop me wanting to find out what happens in the story.

Seems well made for price
This jacket is very cheap for how it appears to be made and the function it performs. It is extremely easy to get on and off. The ring on the back has held up well to the sudden jolts that are inevitable when my puppy reaches the end of the extendable lead. The coat keeps him warm and dry at the moment but I expect it will be just as good in the winter. So far, the plastic zip works well.
It is important that you measure your dog correctly as the sizes are not really what you would expect; e.g. my 3 month puppy (medium sized dog) had to have an XL.
Time will tell whether this product lasts but, because my puppy is growing, the price is cheap enough for it not to matter much.
