Joe Meek's 1959 space fantasy finally available.
I HEAR A NEW WORLD – JOE MEEK AND THE BLUE MEN Well I have waited a long time to hear this so-called ‘masterpiece’ and finally took the plunge and ordered it online from dvdlegacyuk, who are actually in the US, but don’t let that worry you folks; everything I have ordered from them has turned up in 10 days or so and the prices make it worth it. So I prized the CD from one of those flexipaks (which are fine unless they get damaged) and put it on the car system (where I do most of my listening) Was it worth it? In a sentence, very much so, Harold. Now I would not recommend this to everyone, it was recorded in 1959 in a flat in Holland Park and much of the overdubbing was done by adding tracks on a second tape machine as previous tracks were playing. There are crudely done double speed voices, bad timing from the band, some very (and I am sure deliberately) out of tune instruments (particularly the piano) some strange sound effects, and early experiments with stereophony. However, if your tastes are eclectic, let’s see, um early Zappa, Beefheart, Eno, Can, Frith - you get the picture - then you might just love it. Now I have seen in other reviews that this is ‘the first rock concept album’ predating Zappa’s ‘Freakout’ by seven years. As a true Zappa fan, I can tell you that neither, to my understanding is the first concept album, I would say that goes to ‘Ride This Train’ by Johnny Cash (1960) as that was released and listened to. You heard it here first folks. The basic theme of ‘New World’ is what life might be like on the moon (seen from the eyes of the late 50’s) Bear in mind this is way before the moon landings, psychedelia and even Hawkwind. Some of the pieces are plain stupid, yet interesting from a recording point of view, but the stand out tracks, ‘Valley of the Saroos’, ‘Magnetic Field’ and the wonderful ‘ The Bublight’ are essential listening. Also noteworthy are the bonus tracks of Joe speaking about some of his recording techniques, and for me personally, him talking about particular microphones, although this is mainly of interest to geeks like myself. Don’t expect anything as rich or accomplished as some of the later RGM productions and you won't be dissapointed. Enjoy.

    Stylus for ion duo deck
Fits the ion duo deck and tracks very well. However it did not work on the vertical ion deck that I have - though it fitted it did not track well enough to use.

    Boss RC 30 Review
When you're looking at loop devices there are certain considerations you must make that suit what you want to use the device for. I have only had the RC30 a short time but here are my initial impressions; For me, I needed something that could run efficiently on batteries (some of the older 'sampling/delay' pedals I had back in the 80's could destroy a brand new PP3 battery in an hour) I also needed the ability to save loops (catered for here by a USB output) and something that could be used easily in a live situation. It achieves most of this; the battery life is impressive and the save and load functions have all worked well so far. Ease of use is maybe the one area that it has shortfalls. Now I do not blame Roland/Boss for this, as with other pieces of kit they have crammed so many features in that many of the switches/buttons have different functions according to what everything else is doing. The fact is that this is not a 'point and squirt' type pedal – you have to learn how to use it to get the best out of it. I have spent some time and so far have had some good results but I am not yet confident on using this in a live situation as I have to decide whether to add one or two external switches for control and I need to know exactly what is going to happen depending on what mode I am in. As I say, you have to know what everything else is doing to know how the pedal functions are going to work, you have to know what recording mode you are in and you have to know how the external switches are going to do and it's not always as obvious as I would like. I am enjoying it and the potential for my solo act is immense and I'm sure that this pedal is going to become an important part of my live sound, but as I say this is not something you can just plug in and use without spending some time with.
