Outstanding and in a class of its own.
My initial impression on opening the box was very positive. I have owned a Squire Affinity Strat for the last seventeen years and am hard-pressed to tell the difference both on initial impression and closer evaluation as below.
The overall build, finish and general quality are exceptional and even on closer inspection I can find nothing to criticise. The body may not be alder as with genuine Fender and Squire Strats but in terms of weight, machining and tone you could not tell the difference. The sunburst finish is particularly well done compared to many similar budget instruments and the lacquered finish is truly impressive.
The neck is true and very nicely shaped with a light oiled finish that makes movement along the neck very easy. And the fret board in either rosewood or a substitute is blemish-free and the fret wires are solid with no rough edges and very level. The machine heads are of good quality and smooth in operation.
Out of the box the action is set very comfortably and you could even take it down further without a fret-levelling job as they are very evenly set. Intonation seems very good with chords up beyond the twelfth fret ringing out well in tune. The pickups at the neck and middle positions have clearly been adjusted for height and volume rather than just assembled. The bridge and related adjusters look fine and the pick guard is well machined and finished.
I find the instrument very playable with excellent tone and very comparable to the Squire Affinity. I wish I could compare it to a USA or Mexican-built Strat but I would expect it to be well up to the challenge. The five-position pickup selector switch, tone and volume controls are all wired and work correctly and the pots are smooth and noiseless in operation. Pickup response is very even across all three positions as delivered.
I had not heard of the Rocktile brand so took a chance based on good testimonials and have not been disappointed; quite the reverse in fact as I am delighted with it. This is an excellent guitar for a budget price. Do not make the mistake of rolling this one in with all the other Chinese-made copies for this is in a class of its own. And not just a 'beginners guitar' either but if you are a serious hobby player or amateur band player you will not be disappointed. The only thing that will hold you back is your playing ability and not this guitar.
