Only The Lonely (1991 film on DVD)
2 of 2 found this helpful This is a film of exceptional quality starring four giants of the cinema; the late John Candy, Maureen O'Hara, Ally Sheedy and Anthony Quinn. The four, along with other stalwarts (James Belusha to name one) of the silver screen, combine effortlessly in this gentle and witty romantic comedy which had Maureen O'Hara making her screen reappearance at the age of 71 after an absence of nearly 20 years.
In essence the story is about a Chicago policeman (Candy) who tries unsuccessfully (at first) to balance filial loyalty to his overbearing and emotionally manipulative, widowed Irish mother (O'Hara) and his growing affection for a shy funeral home worker (Sheedy).
The dialogue is witty, perceptive and beautifully delivered. The performances (including a touching cameo role by Anthony Quinn as a Greek neighbour in love with the character played by O'Hara) are polished as one would expect from a cast list of such calibre, and the story littered with keenly perceived, inciteful observations about the human dilemma and the often-complicated dynamic between a controlling mother and a duty-bound son trying to keep everyone happy.
This is a film to savour for all its charm, and to relish for the performances of its cast, particularly that of O'Hara none of whose immense appeal - visual or thespian - has dimished since her heyday in the 1940s and 50s.
