17'" Intel iMac
3 of 4 found this helpful If you want an entry level mac this is a good place to start. It is one of the earlier macs with an Intel processor which means that whilst it can be picked up (as I did on Ebay) at a relatively cheap price the latest software will still run on it. This isn’t the case with PowerPC chipped Macs.
Though a few years old now it is still very nicely styled and has a small desktop footprint. It is quite capable as a professional system but it also makes a nice solution for a more inexperienced - maybe elderly user who just wants to email and use the net. BBC iPlayer looks pretty good on it’s high quality screen.
Whilst Macs are not really virus proof - maybe a case of being ignored than being super secure, in practise they do not get hit as much as PCs so again wouldn’t scare a less experienced user.

Why the 5th gen Nano may be the best!
2 of 2 found this helpful This 5th generation Nano, despite being superseded by the 6th gen Nano, is probably the best Apple is likely to make. Their current focus is on the iPhone and on ‘cloud’ computing so they are unlikely to spend much time improving Mp3 devices without built-in internet access.
Why is it the best? Mostly because it retains the clickwheel controller which is still a delight to use. This is very subjective but for me the latest Nano with its on-screen icon driven control system is a bit ‘fiddly’ to use. I will not deny it is lovely so if you are after an electronic piece of jewellery give it a try - also if you’re a jogger who wants something light and unobtrusive.
Back to the 5th gen Nano. If you just need something for the train or general listening the 5th gen Nano covers all the bases. The radio is neat as is the live pause feature (also on the 6th gen). What the 6th gen Nano misses out on is not able to record or play video like this one. Nor does it have a built-in speaker which allows it to be used without headphones - a bit ‘tinny’ but better than nothing, or a microphone. Not quite sure how useful this feature is but if you should need to save yourself a message you can do so.
Try to get a 16GB version. The 8GB will fill up quite quickly and you will have no room should you ever want to shoot any video.
Get a case for it. Just a cheap one as you will not want to scratch it or sit on it by mistake and when you come to Ebay it in the future it will be a dated but still desirable object.
