Very good in parts
A captivating historical story about an Englishman living in the Spanish Alpujarras in about the 1930's or so. It does give quite an insight into just how relatively backward this area was at the time, and does so in a way that both intrigues and surprises. It talks about the people, their way of life, and their beliefs. It does linger (in my view too long) on several visits by famous members of the Bloomsbury group, but is still a very informative, sometimes painfully so. It is centred on Brennan's life in Yegen, a small village high in the Alpujarra. If you get the chance, pay a visit in the flesh, I did so in 1992, and also last October. Chris Stewart's "Driving over Lemons" (and sequels) is also a great insight into the Alpujarran people, and he really has really lived, and is living, the way of life of the locals.
