JIMMIE RODGERS
This 1997 softcover edition of Porterfield's biography was purchased because my original hardcover copy (1979) was inaccessible in storage and I needed to read it for a research project on Gene Autry.
I recalled that it had been rich in background about Jimmie with much of the recording company business covered in detail but I discovered upon re-reading the book that much was missing. The telescopic view of of Jimmie Rodgers had brought him into sharp focus but left much unseen outside the narrow field of view. There was the useful discography with brief stories on how some songs came to be recorded or credited but the focus remained on the Victor product. Of the person whose career advanced rapidly recording Rodgers' songs there was no mention at all. Others, like Johnnie Marvin, were name-dropped with no look at his Rodgers' output or that of his brother Frankie. Nor was there mention of the the royalty deals wherein Rodgers, Autry and Ralph Peer benefited from Gene's recordings on the Gennett, ARC and Columbia Phonograph labels.
There is much of value in the book but a host of telling details related to the record business stories and some of the people actively involved in them are missing while space is taken up with laundry lists of names with no direct bearing on the Rodgers' story.
