Classic Eugene Peterson
Eugene Peterson takes us through the life and times of King David in his usual thorough and insightful way. The contents page gives the theme for each of the chapters and it is clear that Peterson has engaged with this story - and the stories within the story - in a detailed way. The subtitle tells us his purpose in doing this: Earthly Spirituality for Everyday Christians.
Anything by Peterson - whether on Jeremiah ("Run with the Horses"), Revelation ("Reversed Thunder"), Jonah ("Under the Unpredictable Plant"), Galatians ("Travelling Light") or his Spiritual Theology series, and so much more - is worth reading. And not just reading for reading's sake, but pondering and savouring what is written. Peterson is a master of concise expression.
One example suffices. Prior to his death, David is attended by Abishag. She never speaks but just is that attentive, unobtrusive support when needed. Peterson comments: "as such a quiet rebuke to others in the story who respond to David's death as either a problem to be solved, an opportunity to be seized, or a difficulty to be negotiated".
Sadly Peterson himself died in late 2018, but he lives on through his writings - and in my opinion each one a classic to be treasured.

One of the tie cords has broken. They need to be threaded through. It would be better if they were attached to the cover somehow.
1 of 1 found this helpful Needed several replacement covers over the years. This seems more sturdy. Easy to put on and take off.
