Loyalty on the Frontier by A.W.Bishop
The original 1863 book was reissued in 2003 to provide valuable insight into the Civil War in the West. It was written by a New York lawyer turned Civil War Colonel in an attempt to explain to the public what it was like to be a Union soldier in a seceded state. He presented an articulate eye-witness account of military events in northern Arkansas and a peek into the lives of the men who served with him. He reveals details of the personal history of selected heroes and villains. He includes direct quotes from the personalities that he is describing. I found this book to be extremely interesting and thought provoking.
