What an experience! The book followed me for days!
2 of 2 found this helpful This is Tom Rob Smith's first published novel. I sure hope he has more coming! (I know he does.) What an experience! The book followed me for days after!
To tell you the truth, I was almost sure I would not like it. The reason for such thinking was my background. I grew up in the Soviet Union and felt that I understand culture of that country very well. Surely, I thought, no foreigner (he is British, I think) could just waltz into a complitely different time and setting and do a good job. At least not with Russia.
I WAS WRONG.
Smith did a great job. I've read the first two chapters online and was hooked! I could not wait until the audiobook would come in the mail. When it finally arrived, I spent all my free time, my sleep time, my Ebay time... and then some... listening. The story grabs you and does not let go. I felt like I went to the 1950s Russia. (And, boy, is it a scary place!)
Smith painted an accurate picture of Stalin's Russia with its propaganda, cover ups, slogans for everyone to remember and things noone should say. He shows people who live in a constant fear, but at the same time help to create fear surroundings around them.
This is a crime story with love and hope threaded in it. Suspence is great. Two main characters (Leo and his wife Raisa) are evolving through out the story. They are definetely not the same people at the end of the story as they were in the beginning. This makes me to believe in Smith's story even more because that's how it works in real life. People are changed by the events in their lives. Smith recognizes this fact.
The only negative thing I want to mention about this Audiobook is the accent of the actor who reads it. Every time there is a dialog, the actor puts on this fake heavy Russian accent. Also, he mispronaunce some names. I had to make fun of it! Why would Russian people who live in Russia talk with an accent to other Russian people who live there? And why would they suddenly lose the ability to properly pronaunce familiar names?
Overall, the book is great. I hope Smith comes out with more soon. I will be first in line to get it!
