Unfortunately the hard drive was dead on arrival, but the seller was very understanding and after we both checked that it was faulty, they issued a speedy refund. Great communication and fast resolution.Reply from: olderandwiser- Feedback replied to by seller olderandwiser.- Feedback replied to by seller olderandwiser. Thanks - and I really hope you have better luck with the next try. Sadly as we said in our chat, we've both had disks that arrived dead, and as we know the couriers aren't always as gentle as they could be. Oh well!

Compact size, simple to use, cheap, yet delivers reliably good rice.
This delivered brilliant perfectly cooked Sushi rice on my first go at using it. I followed the instructions to the letter, making sure to wash the rice well and then added the exact amount of water specified.
I used the white rice program and the results were outstanding. Of course results may vary if you use a different type of rice - mine was Japanese grown large fat sushi type grains - so I can't guarantee your Basmati or whatever will work exactly the same - however judging by my results it works pretty well. I've also used brown rice.
One point worth noting is that you should definitely NOT add any salt as this will completely mess up the water absorption and cooking, which depends on having the correct osmotic pressure. If you want your rice seasoned, then please add it afterwards or your results WILL be poor. Based on my experience as a cook, I suspect that at least some of those who have reviewed this machine as poor may have been adding salt to the cooking water - which even when cooking rice in a pan is not really ideal.
The machine is very compact but will easily produce enough rice for up to 6 serving. So far it seems very reliable, and at the price a real bargain.

Unbeatable Network Player at the price.
A few years ago I decided that I would setup a mini DLNA server on one of my BSD based servers. This allowed me, in theory, to access my entire music collection from any room in the house. However there has always been a limitation on this, in that playback quality has been slightly limited by the network players that i have been able to afford.
Marantz, Denon, Pioneer, and several other manufacturers all make network audio playback devices, as do a number of much more expensive brands like Linn, but sadly I've never found a player that sits in the sweet spot between being prohibitively expensive, or cheap but sounding uninspired. Believe me I've tried several.
I think part of the problem is that many of these players use CLASS D digital amps, which whilst technically flawless, can sound a bit closed in and characterless. So I was keen to try the Cambridge Audio Minx Xi which has a CLASS AB power amp.
Having now purchased one on ebay for just shy of £400 I can honestly say I'm blown away. Married with a pair of Eltax Monitor III speakers the sound is detailed and balanced. A pleasing open sound reminds me somewhat of my old QUAD 303, an amplifier that I still struggle to better.
On the downside both the bluetooth dongle and the wifi dongle have to be plugged in via USB, and there are dire warnings not to accidentally unplug them whilst the unit is powered up. After that the setup went relatively easily, and the internet radio tuner is GREATLY superior to the Denon system, in that it doesn't rely on Vtuner - for which one has to pay a small annual subscription.
The streaming APP which one downloads onto a phone is, to my mind not quite as easy to use as the DENON app, but it works well enough. On the machine I bought, (which was new old stock) the remote control needed a good clean before it worked properly, and it seems to have rather limited range, so I may eventually buy a replacement.
Overall I would say that at the price the Minx xi is an unbeatable product, and I would strongly recommend it.
