Geeetech Newest MK8 extruder for 3D printer MakerBot Prusa I3 from London
10 Oct, 2018
Need to take care with the thermistor
Fitted this to a cheap i3 clone (which actually prints pretty well). Had issues with the stock extruder so tried fitting various different extruder mechanisms but they didn't fit perfectly. Managed to get it printing ok, though. Decided to try this replacement to make it all a bit less Heath Robinson. While it needed a bit of fiddling to get it to work (I had to drill a new hole in the carrier to fit it) it was relatively easy to mount. Point to note - having a sprung lever to release the feed bearing makes it much easier to load filament but the motor has to be on the right for the lever to be at the front (and you can't mount it the other way round as the lever fouls the carriage). My only real issue with this extruder was the thermistor - it's not looped through (as the photos suggest) but simply pushed into a hole drilled into the aluminium block. While mounting onto the carriage, the thermistor popped out but was still just touching the block. When I tried it out the thermistor ended up reading cool so the controller pumped the hot end up to the point where the PLA burnt. Remounting the hot end and ensuring the thermistor was seated correctly fixed the problem - but will try a different hot end as there are plenty out there that look like they have more secure mountings for the thermistor.

You get what you pay for
The drills are cheap - the 8mm was bent. Not an issue given the low cost but don't expect premium quality
