A good book let down by the design
1 of 1 found this helpful Mark Smithers is a leading expert on very small gauge railways and his previous books have all been very good. This one is also good and is an essential part of the library of anyone who is interested in 18 inch gauge railways, and industrial railways. The superb map of the Woolwich Arsenal system is probably worth the cover price to a true enthusiast. And Mark's seminal work "18 inch Gauge Steam Railways" has been out of print for a long time and is hard to find second hand - so anyone who doesn't have it will certainly want this book. The cover suggests that the subject is a standard gauge industrial system but that is misleading - the narrow gauge is just as important, and there aren't as many pictures of the standard gauge as I was expecting. Unfortunately this book has a significant flaw. Many of the pictures, including the small number which are published here for the first time, are far too small. Some of the best images are mere thumbnails. There is no excuse for this - enthusiasts will accept poor quality images if it is obvious that the original medium is flawed,- but what is really unacceptable is when a unique view which is a poor quality image is reproduced at such a small size that one simply cannot see it properly. Many of the readers of this book will be of an age where eyesight is not as good as it was, and I personally found it very frustrating to be unable to get the full benefit of the images. I doubt this is the author's fault. I think the designer of this book may have misunderstood the market it is aimed at. So it's 4 stars, instead of 5.

Haven't tried it yet but the spec ticks all the right boxes for a straight SAE30 GL4 for my Vetus Maxwell windlass

You get what you pay for
You get what you pay for and these are cheap and cheerful. No way could you call these precision tools. I haven't chucked them in the bin, I'll keep them as back-ups, but I'm looking around for something which gives a better fit and expect to pay a lot more when I find it.
