One step, one day at a time doing time. A page turner.
This book informs the reader about the reality of unexpected comraderie from unexpected sources. A young enthusiastic police officer is abandoned by the Yorskire Police line management after a convicted thug with help from a two faced back stabbing female sergeant supported by a chronically stupid male judge eventually convince a jury of peers that this young officer did not just defend himself from a vicious sustained assault by the thug John Patterson who was trying to murder Mick in front of other officers who were busy detaining another thug - reading about the assault is shocking to say the least and shockingly this known criminal Patterson only received a community order and fine despite his sustained attack on a serving police officer - after Mick's trial concluded the jury were apparently very shocked and upset when their guilty verdict resulted in a police officer receiving a custodial sentence rather than the usual caution or fine despite overwhelming evidence that self defense had been absolutley neccessary to save his own life. But collusion between a morally corrupt career climbing sergeant Milburn and a lack of proper humane direction from this overtly biased judge led Mick Bunting to a sharp shock of prison inactivity, starvation and abuse combined with daily fear of attack amongst the cohort of career criminals he had set his life long ambition to take out of society to make our community safer. Mick Bunting is clearly a man of intellect, and tenacity - he has written a first novel about life amongst societies scum, neighbourhod trash with the odd gem of humanity coming from the most unlikely sources, one of his newfound friend's in prison overwhelms Mick when he asks the taboo question to discover this human being happens to be a murderer with remorse. Another human being amongst the stupid hysterical hyenas is a swindler who keeps to himself the secret about Mick's past occupation, secretly assisted by prison officers who try their best to protect their professional colleague from harm. The narrative is easy to read, no fancy convuluted words - the everyday expression's and use of dialect perfectly fits the theme leading this reader to turn page after page - the simmering anger and the decriptive odour of living with prisoners of impoverished intellect inside prison for being truly guilty of stupid crimes keeps the pages turning to find out if Mick keeps his secret life and his own life intact. I recommend without reservation this tale of fear, depression and strength of charachter from a young man who writes without bitterness but with well placed anger, without selfpity but with deserved pride, a man who survived thoughts of selfharm, a man of our times who comes from a hard working supportive loving family as he survives prison and conquers the system one step at a time.
