Magical family film
Magical family film with its heart in the 1964 original, and some lovely connections with it, but not so much as to prevent it being a minor classic in its own right. One is bound to make comparisons with the original and it holds up extremely well. Emily Blunt makes an extremely good Poppins (though not in the same league as the original, of course) and Lin-Manuel Miranda makes a much more convincing cockney than Dick van Dyke. The rest of the cast put in very pleasing performances, including the delightful three children and a couple of brief starry cameos. It has, of course, the benefit of CGI (which the 1964 original didn't have) so can do much more with the special effects but somehow they don't quite match the magic of the original.
The songs are very pleasing: tuneful with some clever lyrics. I didn't think they wrote songs like that anymore.
All in all, a film much better than expected which improves with each viewing.

Definitive The Sound of Music double CD.
An amazing 2-disc CD of ALL the music from the film The Sound of Music: not just the full-length songs from the film soundtrack (as opposed to the album) but every single note of incidental music, too. Brilliant.
