For the past few years, I have lived in apartments and now a row home, and I never wanted to disturb those around me - treat others as you'd want to be treated, right??? With that, practicing my horn went down the drain as something I longed to do, but wouldn't...
Finally during the COVID-19 self-distancing when my weekly community band was no longer gathering, I decided to splurge! And I am SO SO glad I did! For the past few weeks the mute has already brought me so much joy and has paid for itself through and through!
The mute and Silent Brass system are both fantastic products!
The physical mute fits snugly into my Holton bell, and I have no fear of it falling out. The foam suction around the mute is very effective, making it sound like you are playing with your hand shoved up the bell, but feeling as if you are playing without any hindrance whatsoever. My only concern about the foam is that it will wear out over time...but at this point I have no complaints at all!
The Silent Brass system honestly made me tear up the first time I used it, it is that realistic! For French horn, the system makes it sound as normal - like most of the instrument's noise would be coming from the right-hand side where the bell faces. I was blown away!
Another feature that I really like is the option for selecting different acoustics for your "practice space:" Option 1 being a standard practice room and Option 2 being a performance hall. Whenever your confidence is feeling low, let me tell you...flip that system to Option 2, and you won't be disappointed! The acoustics sound incredible and exactly like it would if you were performing on stage!
The only kind-of negative thing I can think to state about the product is that the headphones included with the product aren't my favorite, they're very hard plastic and don't fit to my ear comfortably. But you can plug any headphones into headphone-jack, so that works out just fine!
If you're on the fence about purchasing...JUMP OVER THE FENCE AND DO IT!!! I would recommend this product to any horn player I know!!
