The Start Of A New Era For Disney
I can remember fondly being dragged to see The Little Mermaid by my wife (then girlfriend at the time). She had been a fan of Disney works for years while I myself only had a passing, private fancy for them. I am pleased to say that this film changed it all. The Little Mermaid represents a new era for Disney. In 1989, this wonderful piece of film heralded the beginning of a decade long sucess with their animated features (with only one or two black marks during those ten years). The film is based upon the simple story first spun by Hans Christian Anderson and given a happier ending by the folks at Disney. The tale centers around a young mermaid named Ariel, who has what her stern, but caring father thinks is an unhealthy fascination with the surface world. She is fond of scouring shipwrecks for surface world items and visiting the surface of the ocean from time to time. It is during one of these visits that she saves a young prince named Eric from a terrible shipwreck and becomes fascinated by him. At the urging of the film's villain, Ursula the Sea Witch, Ariel gives up her fins for legs as she ventures to the surface world in search of Prince Eric. Joining her for her adventure are a goofy seagul named Scuttle (voiced brilliantly by the late Buddy Hackett) and a crab named Sebastian, who tries to act as the voice of reason. The voice acting is top notch, but it is the music that really sets this animated film apart from others of its time. It is hard to find someone who cannot hum, whistle or even sing at least one of the seven original songs by composer Alan Menken and lyricist Howard Ashman. The animation is good by today standards, but it is the story and sound that make this film really shine. Children will enjoy the humor and performances by the characters in the film, but some may find the sea witch Ursula and the movies climatic battle a bit scary. This film is a genuine classic that should be on every family's movie shelf.

Yo Ho Ho, It's A Pirate's Life For All Of Us
I was told once that if you threw enough darts, you'd hit the bullseye at least once. Perhaps this was Disney's approach with their "movie-based-upon-an-attraction" streak as of late. You look back at a few of the toilet gems that Disney has given us (Country Bears, Haunted Mansion) and you might say to yourself "Cripes, why don't you quit trying to get a purse from a sow's flabby backside?". Of course, all that changes once a little actor named Johnny Depp found the character of Captain Jack Sparrow and truly made it his own. Pirates Of The Carribean 2: Dead Man's Chest is not a great piece of storytelling or a showcase from Oscar winning performances (of course, I had no such expectations). What we do get in this film is what made the first film so enjoyable: little bursts of fun that make you wish you could be the one strutting around on an old ship with an eyepatch and a cutlass at your side. This time around, Captain Jack Sparrow discovered that his debt to Davy Jones is being called in and he goes on the run from the terror from the depths in a mad search of a way to weasle out of the deal. That is the story in a nutshell, but it is easilly lost and made complicated by the script attemtping to give almost every major and minor chracter reasonable screne time. I'm not saying that it is not an enjoyable effort, but most of my friends and family took a few viewings of the film to figure out what was going on. There are a few performances that really bring this film up a notch. I have to mention Johnny Depp, since you can tell that he is really having a lot of fun playing Captain Jack Sparrow and he holds nothing back when he is on the screen. I also enjoyed Naomie Harris, who played Tia Dalma a.k.a The Voodoo Lady. She really added to the feel of the film and played wonderfully off the rest of the cast. However, there is one performance that I personally felt stood above the others and that is of Stellan Skarsgård a.k.a Bootstrap Bill. Stellan really sold me on the pain and suffering he experienced after signing on with Davy Jones crew. As well, he also projected quite well Bootstrap's love for his sun, Will Turner. The special effects were nice, but really didnt "wow" me. I know a lot of people raved about Davy Jones and his crew, but I didn't consider it too much of a feat (even after watching a few "how they did it" specials on the subject). The scenery was average as well, but I think all this will change in the next film when the crew heads to World's End to search for Captain Jack Sparrow. In the end, I'd recommend this film if you're looking for an enjoyable adventure movie and a great Johnny Depp performance. Be warned, however, that this film is somewhat dark and there are some parts that may frighten small children.

A Dog Gone Good Movie
When looking for a film for my daughter's sixth birthday, the wife and I decided to take a chance on Firehouse Dog. It looked like your standard cheap kid's flick and we didn't have our expectations set very high. Needless to say, we were very surprised and delighted to find a fun and well-put together family film. The film centers around Rexxx, a top-notch Hollywood action star who happens to be a dog. He is at the top of his game and has everything a dog could want... including a wig. After a stun gone wrong, Rexxx winds up the mascot of a sad-sack firehouse. He meets Shane (played wonderfully by Josh Hutcherson) and after some initial dislike, the two grow a strong bond and help each other "find themselves". Overall, the film is pretty good. What I really like about the film is that it had something for everyone. Action, romance, humor, drama... all the pieces are there. Every member of the cast gives 100% and it shows. While this film is no "Finding Nemo", it is still a decent little film with a lot of heart. As for my daughter's review, the six year old loved it. My four year old really loved it and was so into it that she did not need to take a bathroom break and was a little upset during some of the more intense parts of the film. Bottom line: It's like Air Bud, but much better. Grab it and enjoy it!
