Insightful Reading
Nicholas O'Shaughnessy writes in a wonderful and classically articulate style - so good to read the English language used so skilfully. The book charts the rise of the German propaganda guru and how he used various techniques (including "The Big Lie") to great effect. Hitler's premis was that, if you tell a lie so great that no one would believe you would have the impudence to tell, the more likely it is that people will believe it. The technique is still widely used today, by governments, official agencies and the supposedly mainstream, respectable, press and media. For a good example of The Big Lie, one need look no further than the Iraq War of 2003, where we were told by our leaders that Saddam Hussein had Weapons of Mass Destruction, when in truth there was insufficient evidence that was the case - and where subsequent events proved there were none.
This book helps one understand the phenomenal power of propaganda - something that, sadly, we gladly still lap up when served to us by our Government or TV news channels and newspapers. It must be right, mustn't it, because they wouldn't lie to us, would they?
