Death and Destruction Everywhere: Let's Dance
When I was teaching *The Great Gatsby* to high school students, we were discussing how Fitzgerald contrasted the period following WWI and the horrible racial theories that were circulating in that era with the characters' desire just to dance and drink it up. I decided to show them the scene from *Downfall* where Eva Braun climbs up on the table to dance to swing music while Berlin crashes down under the Russian barrage. When a bomb strikes nearby and the wall crashes in, it gets the point across--and then some. This movie does a fabulous job of mixing the momentous world events of April 1945 with the idiosyncracies of individual behavior and the dynamics of a group of people just emerging from a decade of mass hysteria to the realization that they have been duped. History books follow the great decisions that leaders make and the wars that often follow, but art (as in this film) explores the human heart that directs these events. Since many of the actors bear a strong resemblance to the persons they represent in the film, viewers have the feeling that they themselves are in the bunker along with the rest of them and can, like an eyewitness, come to understanding of a madness unwrapping itself. But we're still left with the question: with death and destruction everywhere, why do we dance?
