Better Than The Smiths
I remember when this album first came out, and just how much i loved it. I said at the time The Smiths would in 20 years time be regarded in the smae way The Beatles are, because of Morrissey, BUT as debut LP's go, The Smiths was patchy. Lloyd Cole & The Commotions on the other hand, delivered a stunning masterpiece, which is surely a contender for one of the best debuts ever. Not only that, but how ahead of their time were they? The 'country' influence, that these days is considered to be 'cool' with a lot of 'Alt-Country' artists being praised bu the music press. Chock full of fantasitic pop songs, and this version has a bonus disc, with live, sessions, and b sides and the odd rare demo. Still sounds fresh and hasn't dated at all (80's records often have that awful 80's sheen on them). If you've never heard this, you should get yourself a copy. You can't go wrong...I met the band once, they signed a poster for me. Nice blokes. I believe everyone who is into real good music should own this.

Not Morrisseys greatest no matter what they tell you
Why so many people rave about this album is a bit beyond me. As a Moz fan from day one, i find this album a bit flat. The production seems a bit basic. I can't deny the album contains one stunning track (Life Is A Pigsty), the rest is simply good, but not brilliant. Again Morrissey botches it by releasing the amazing 'Ganglord' as a B.Side to a rather average almost Oasis sounding single. And it's not the first time he's done this : Nobody Loves Us on Dagenham Dave, A Swallow On my Neck on Sunny, Lost on Roy's Keen...i could go on...and on a bit like what Ringleaders does! If these B.sides were on the albums, they would improve them so much. Ok i'm being harsh, this is an OK album although it still stands out from most of the dross that is marketed as 'Alternative' or 'Indie'these days. But if you are just starting out in Morrissey land, PLEASE start with Vauxhall & I, and Your Arsenal, for it it those that deserve the title of Morrissey's greatest.
