    Interesting but inaccurate.
The author describes himself as a "tinkerer-guitarist with just about enough knowledge to be dangerous". I can't argue with that. Anyone expecting technical accuracy will undoubtedly be disappointed by this book. The author quickly demonstrates exactly how dangerous his lack of knowledge of basic electronic theory actually is by making statements that are just plain wrong e.g. "the flow of electrons from the grid to the plate increases the signal strength, or gain". A resistor is described as a "voltage-blocking cylinder". Some of the above may be a result of the author's attempt to make the subject more approachable for non-technical reader. However, it did not seem to occur to the author that it might be a good idea to explain to the aforesaid non-technical reader how a thermionic valve actually works before launching into a description of the operation of a pre-amp stage. Unfortunately, Mr. Hunter also appears to subscribe to the theory that certain types of passive electronic components have special, sometimes almost magical "tonal" characteristics. To be fair, he does put in plenty of caveats (or, perhaps more likely, a sub-editor at the publishing company did!), but these do not prevent him from wandering off into those distant realms of electronic voodoo usually inhabited by dodgy amplifier salesmen. Statements such as "That's what carbon comp resistor mojo really is - the resistors are distorting in a way that our ears like" (albeit carefully quoted from an online article by someone else!) do nothing to establish the author's credibility with the reader. The purpose of all the Tube Voodoo seems to pacify the god "Tone", who is best invoked by summoning his sidekick "Vintage", whereupon he becomes "smooth" and "warm". Of course, just one sniff of his younger brother, the unspeakably evil "Semiconductor" (spit), and the god "Tone" gets really nasty, becoming "sterile" and "harsh" etc, etc. I'm sure you get the drift. In all, the book falls well short of its modest claim of being an "all-you-need-to-know guide to tube amplifiers". Having said this, if you already know enough about the subject to be able to filter out the irritating BS and mumbo-jumbo, there is enough interesting and useful information on the design and layout of various classic valve amps to make it a worthwhile read.

    GripIt 152-258 Yellow 15mm Plasterboard Fixing 8pk
    30 Mar, 2018
Stupid design - almost impossible to find the right drill bit.
I bought this product so that I could put up some shelves at the weekend. I saw that it needs a15mm flat wood bit to make the hole for insertion into the plasterboard. I get out my set of wood bits, and find that I have 12mm or 16mm. My previous experience of this type of product is that the hole in the plasterboard needs to be accurately made; if not, the fixing will perform poorly. I wasted 3 hours of my day visiting various hardware retailers, including Screwfix, Homebase, B&Q, and The Range. I could buy a 14mm bit or a 16mm bit, but NONE OF THEM SOLD A 15mm WOOD BIT. Of course, you can buy a 15mm bit from Gripit if you want to wait a few days. What a stupid, stupid design! If they had made it 1mm bigger or 1mm smaller it would be easy to obtain the correct bit in pretty much any DIY store. I threw Gripits in the bin and bought some conventional fixings. The only thing the Gripits will be supporting is the local landfill, which is where this product richly deserves to be.
Wenko Foil Cling Film Dispenser Perfect Cutter up to 30cm
    25 Nov, 2020
    Dangerous device best avoided.
Cuts film beautifully. But you need to open it to find the edge so that you can pull out some more film. That's when you cut yourself on the very sharp blade that is in the edge of the top lid - just where you grip it. I'm amazed that they sell these as they would not pass any normal safety tests. I managed to cut myself twice before I threw it in the bin.
