The Make-It-Yourself Shoe Book by C. Lewis Clark (1977)
I bought this book to replace a copy I used to teach myself shoe making in the 1980s, so that I can share the knowledge with younger people interested in developing these skills. It's an excellent book - clearly written and illustrated, which gives all the basic techniques you need to create your own designs of mocassins, shoes and sandals for adults and children, with only minimal use of power tools, or special equipment. Of course, the shoes you can make with these methods are not shiney or glamorous, but some practice of stitching by hand can result in a pleasing, natural, but smooth finish. If you take the time to follow the instructions carefully,you may find as I did, that your friends will be asking you where you got your lovely, comfortable looking footwear. I would recommend this book without reservation, and was delighted to find a good, hardback copy on E-bay at a fraction of the price it sells at specialist book suppliers, since it has been out of print.
