How to get the best out of these great traps
1 of 1 found this helpful First of all, you might need to spend 30 seconds with a pair of pliers to get the catch that holds the door open just how you want it, I did this to get an easy smooth release. I also spent another 30 seconds moving the springs to another hole so they were tighter so the trap sprung more quickly. After that they were amazing, they are also well built and very sturdy.
I tried various baits including peanut butter on crackers, bird seed, mealworms, and slices of hot dog sausages.
The rats spent a couple of days sniffing around the outside but wouldn’t go in, but after a couple of days I found that the food had gone but the sneaky rat had avoided the trigger wire. I then put out some more hot dog sausages and crackers, and also smeared the trigger wire with peanut butter, again I found the food gone but no rat and the peanut butter on the wire untouched.
I then speared a whole hot dog sausage onto the trigger wire inside the cage, so it was hanging down, if they wanted any food then there was no choice but to try the hot dog and that would spring the trap. This worked every time and I found two very angry rats in the cages, which I popped into a Sainsbury’s bag and then released them into the wild near a driver a few miles away.
Great traps if you use them properly and another top tip is to cover the floor of the trap in soil, bark, or some other garden material.
